As previously mentioned I am now posting some of the resulting projects from the workshop in Lund, Sweden last December called Worlds from Words – (c)rises resort. The starting point was the book “The Drowned World” by J.G. Ballard. By choosing specific points from the book and personal narratives each student formed their own Brief for a productive resort in the coast of Sweden. Thanks for Maria Knutsson for the pin up pictures.

From top left – clockwise: Loner’s House by Hannes Karlsson, The nest by Magnus Casselbrant, Resonance by Felix Hansson and Stranded Season by Maria knutsson (bottom left).

From top left – clockwise: Pin up area, Hydroplant by Oliver Pershav, Above the clouds by Lovisa Lindström and Tape Archive by Philip Barsan (mid left).

On this site you can find a lot of data and material about London’s current situation, what is planned and what has been decided regarding green/public areas, housing, waste management, energy, food consumption, etc… http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/strategies/sds/index.jsp
…and here more specifically related to the borough of Tower Hamlets / East London: http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/planning/srdf/docs/east-srdf.pdf
…and that’s a document about the so called “City Fringe”, the transisiton zone between the City of London and the East End: http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/planning/city-fringe.jsp
Please note that you don’t have to know about all this and read it all. Pick the things that are interesting to you and your chosen subject.

As I told many of you today I came across a book called “Descriptions of Egypt” which documents Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt in 1798. It includes many interesting drawings like these:
Dye works and Rope Making (! seems to be an old tradition)
For a few more drawings see: ingenious.org.uk maybe you can find more on other sites. Both the British Library and the Science Museum Library seem to hold a copy, in case you are interested in seeing them all.

If you haven’t come across this website yet, check it out. It’s from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and provides some useful graphics and statistics… not most up-to-date though.
