Dear Ricardo and Nannette,

Referencing the Reynar Banham ” Home is not a house” I got into thinking of the outer shells which well-temper the environment and the inner cores of the living house which is technology, whether it is a digital tool, mechanical or a technique of some kind.v

Man started with two basic waysdallegret-07-b of controlling environment: one by avoiding the issue and hiding under a rock, tree, tent or roof (this led ultimately to architecture as we know it) and the other by actually interfering with the local meteorology, usually by means of a campfire, which, in a more polished form, might lead to the kind of situation now under discussion. Unlike the living space trapped with our forebears under a rock or roof, the space around a campfire has many unique qualities which architecture cannot hope to equal, above all, its freedom and variability.

I have started the development with a couple of questions, the most important one being: How can technology in relation to a technique help the people transition the usual labor work in
to a learning process which can evolve and also be modified. The current idea consists out of two overlapping  programs.  The first one is  the separation of the fields of work such as agriculture, garment production, education and so on, and the other one is focusing on the public and private spaces within the community. Scan 188Scan 187

The site of the slums is situated in the central district of Dhaka, having communal houses, hospitals, markets, industrial factories and schools the society which I am proposing can benefit from these site neighbors. 2022 Bangladesh Scenario: a widowed or divorced woman with a child or two when looking for a place better than the inherited land plot comes to the new slum of Dhaka city. When the family arrives they get the assigned sphere or assigned space – their private home which can be modified to their own needs. The spaces on the site are marked out digitally. There are the private spaces, the public spaces and areas of shared ownership. Each home sphere has the ” court yard ” – this being 1-2 meters of space around the fabric shell. These personal spaces alter depending on the exact shape of the sphere ( the fabric shells being adjusted to the temperature, constant change of openings for the fresh air or just physical stretch for more need of space). The public spaces are not allowed to be overlapping with private spaces. The newly joined people have to construct their homes avoiding the public areas. This can relate back to the arduino and the pencil drawings the robots created. The only problem is that there they had a guide which was the light source. Here I believe I’m lacking the controlling part of the program. What decide which area is public or private. What makes the rules?

The second program of the labor work is taking it’s origin in the idea of the assembly conveyor belt. Labor work within itself does not require anything but a set of already learned skills. Knowing that women of Bangladesh are not the easiest to accommodate in new environments or professions I want to create a system where a change is common and completely normal. The allows to stretch out the pathways to the closest spheres in the surroundings. One family is connected physically to the other, which is in it’s turn connected to some other family which altogether creates a chain or a conveyor belt. If for example this chain of people are growing rice, they establish a trade with the neighboring restaurant in the district. The first two spheres share a fabric/land and grow rice on it – this is shared ownership. The third than cleans the rice and prepares it for the cooking, the forth one cooks and the fifth makes the trade with the restaurant ( a very abstract example for now). However, one link of the chain, the middle sector family, may decide that the fish chain industry is more beneficial for them and they switch to the closest fish pathway, in this case the previous rice chain finds itself to be broken and either re-formats the assignment of activities or looks for a new member. SECTION OF SPHERE

What this system is trying to achieve is a growing business start-ups. The sustainability of the family itself independent on the field of work can be achieved due to the equality of the people and their social classes. And because the spheres are 360 degree surface these pathways can be made not only in horizontal or vertical planes but 3 dimensional, growing upwards and keeping up with the city. This might become a boom for the street markets around and force them to grow higher, having floor levels dedicated to a specific product.

Hope it was clear enough to understand. The idea is quite extreme at some points but I think it could be a starting point of the future work.

Thanks for the post Maria, here are some points to consider and improve.

1- There is a lot of writing and not all is clear, so it gets hard to decipher your real intention in some places. You mentioned that you had two questions to base your project on, but you just mentioned one as far as we could understand the text. Could you maybe re-phrase the existing question, it is very abstract for now. Which technology, which technique? Evolve, labour? Interesting, but very abstract for now.

2- The drawing indicates connection to buildings, that is definitely not a good idea, as the whole threshold question is a project in itself. Of course it will be part of a context, but a very well defined place where that community interacts with the existing in its own terms. Look at Maya masterplan for example, your do not need to so big, but finding an order where your project is not only about technique, but the landscape they generate, link: http://pr2014.aaschool.ac.uk/submission/uploaded_files/INTER-03/maya.laitinen-PLAN%20DIAGRAMS.jpg

3- It is exciting to know you are thinking about your own arduino project as reference, the idea of drawing paths could maybe not be the whole house but part of a process of constantly reworking spaces, a landscape that shift in some areas, due to the possibility of rearrangement. Small communities can maybe adapt and evolve quicker. Jonhathan project last year could be a good reference here where the machine at the end was part of the process, but only to print, draw the irrigation pipes that would subdivided the land in areas of use. Those areas where based (their input) on map biographies the project collected from women in Sri Lanka

3- (continuation). here is a link for the project

4- Focus on the strategy and master configuration of the interesting ideas of home and technology, but without stretching too thin (like connecting to existing buildings, etc)

Good luck!
