Rendering Stuff

Hola guys – this is a tutorial that I sometimes use, maybe it will be useful for some people. It’s for creating a (clean) metal material, in mental ray (in all programs, e.g. maya, 3ds max, etc – using the Arch&Design materials) It explains the physics of how metal should reflect / “refract”, to make a nice image… I always find clean metal to be the hardest thing to render without it looking like car-showroom glossy fake bullsh*t – hopefully it’s of some use 🙂

PS – if anybody needs some High Dynamic Range Imaging – HDRI – maps, (the thing which makes the background reflection in his image) – then there is a big pack here:

In max, put it in the “environment map” slot (use a spherical projection), in the environment settings (key 8 ) …

in maya, “image-based lighting” in the mental ray environment section, to make an environment ball…

in rhino vray, put it in the GI (skylight) slot, in environment, as a bitmap…

in C4D I have no idea, but it’s definitely possible

Good morning guys –

I was wondering if anybody had any servos kicking around from the arduino workshop which they didn’t need, and could give to me (for money or for free). If so, could you bring them in today? Need a couple of servos for a quick prototype test

Request: Chor Bazaar Parts

Hola guys – I’m assembling a sort of “parts list” of Chor Bazaar. At the moment based on my photos I have: AC, car parts (gears, engines, electronics), speakers, lights, fans, mobiles, electronics (switches, circuit breakers, etc), wheels, tools, (antiques, clothes, food, too)

I was wondering if anyone had other photos of shops selling other things which I may have missed and wouldn’t mind emailing them to me?

I understand fully if no one can be bothered to send stuff, but if anyone does have any photos, it would really help!

Thanks very much

Hola guys – a things I was discussing with Ricardo. May be useful for Natalie’s project in particular?

Microsoft’s PhotoSynth project – basically takes user-taken photos of a building/place, and calculates their relationship to each other, stitching them together into a 3d scene, quite cool. Unfortunately you have to install a plugin to use it, but it’s worth it. It’s been around for two years but not many people seem to have heard of it… I only found out last year.

Some examples with a lot of photos:

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple (if you keep clicking towards the door you can enter inside and explore in there)

Koeln Cathedral

The interface can be a bit strange, but the best way I find is to click on a highlighted photo in the image itself to draw it to the centre, rather than using the controls. Sometimes you get rotation arrows on the photo if there’s enough information around the area.

More interestingly, if you look around at the other examples you see people creating fake realities, from computer game screenshots, etc. Perhaps would be interesting to alter photos to create “hacked” realities?

United Nations’ Slums Working Paper & Mike Davis’ Planet of Slums Book

Two documents from my research, that might be useful if anyone else is looking at slums, especially why and how they exist within urban and global developments. The UN paper is very broad and dense, but has some interesting info from sometimes an unusual (objective) point of view. The book is full of great research and detail, and is also a short read.
