Hello Ricardo and Nanette ,

The design of the memorial tower and place of birth of the future forest has evolved .

It is a curvy concrete sculpture like structure made out of the imprint of the objects ( resulting from a funeral ritual giving birth to the new Forest ).

The structure itself acts as a portal to enter this new forest which takes places on 1 M AND 2 above sea level .

the addition of this concrete structure filled with memory and objects made me think that that could be repeated further out in the forest , acting as anchors points for the structure to attach and maybe becoming landmarks every year .

Rendering is still an issue , the background with the Kampung is stil rendering . This image show my main chosen colours , the mystic background and the trash looking refreshing but still blending in with the environment .

The people in the drawing are horrible at the moment but still expanding my repertoire and thinking of a way to represent it .

( Fishnets are still not working out but will one day 🙂 )

All my best and See. you soon

🙂 🙂

Hello Ricardo and Nannette .

Still looks a bit messy but pieces are coming together .

The shape of the tower gained resolution , it is a concrete structure raising in the city scape as a memorial , Casted with objects and leftovers from the fiction of Kampung Akuarium .

The tower is resulting from a ” funeral ” of objects and it is the initiator point of the forest , the source .

Still woking on fishnet and columns !! 🙂

Hello Ricardi and Nannette 🙂

Sorry for the late post , was hoping to put a finished texture of my trash surface .

I’m still in a rough phase for the drawing , as I working in fragments .

Trying to master the curvature and the texture ( scale of it )of the fishnet which is still loading but should be done by this weekend

I also started Working with creating my own pattern

Having still some issues with the rendering in c4d as I downloaded a new plug-in .

My view has changes due to the emergence of the new tower ( still in design ) and putting the drawing into a specific context on plan seeing Kampung Bangfan in the background .

Hope to get over all these new obstacle this weekend so I can post on the blog how things come together Sunday 🙂

best

Hello Ricardo and Nannette 🙂

This is the first Draft of the drawing .

3 scenes are showed .

  1. on the Right side the fishing areas , where people can interact on the leisure activity of fishing but with this new resource : trash . (The seeds of their new forest ) .The small fishing areas link to a bigger fishnet , where they’re catch are disposed , and as well other visitors can put their trash on the big fishnet .
    1. Assorting : though a system of pulling , all the various type of trash is taken to the assorting tower . Where Kampung residents , organize in through categories .
  2. Market : The assorted trash is then led through slopes into the market where people can use it to expand their forest . ( as on the left side , we see a modular construction )

3- Further in the back we see a gathering space made with these files containers , and the cityscape showers the relationship to the MEGACITY .

The forest becomes a multifunctional platform that keeps expanding , and it’s functions changes with time . What becomes interesting then as the forest landscape is shaped with the human mind is that the forest shapes and fucntions will embody it’s fantasies and eprceptions .

I am implementing. anew tower , which will be recording more specifically the growth of the forest bu as well a place to accommodate visitors and exchange thoughts .

Best

Celine:)

Hello Nannete and Ricardo 🙂

The concept and the idea of the design got way clearer since our last meeting .

The future forest is a multifunctional platform . It shrink , expands and can be taken out . This forest doesn’t have trees or vegetation It’s structure mimics the forest canopy ( the lost one ) . The structural liberty of the new forest makes it possible to not be stuck on the physical aspect of things and through time becomes a recording device od how people perceive the forest as they can physically shape it. It is born from the ” ashes” of the old one with it’s objects . or as the kampung residents call “seeds” . Floating collumns , stocking inside floatable waste is the foundation of this forest . including facilities such as : – fishing trash ( trash recycling )

  • playgrounds and public spaces .
  • A space of gathering including a promenade leading to the higher point of it’s topography /.
  • I had a few issues with rendering and making the section on cinema 4D .
  • Here is where I am so far , I am starting to feel more comfortable with 3D 🙂

Hello Ricardo and Nanette ,

The project design aim got clearer and I made the first draft design of what would happened in this Island Made From Trash .

The new Forest is dealing with conservation , sense of belonging , human imprints .

I wrote a short story about the emergence of these Island Grounds in the river :

Suratmo, a fisherman living on the banks of Kampung Akuarium could only laugh softly when asked about his catch today. He replied that he could no longer be called a fisherman. For the last five years, his income has no longer come from catching fish but selling the trash he has collcted.

The fish has disappeared , due to big amount of trash and toxicity in the water of Jakarta . For the people of Kampungs the river has always been seen as their trash can .As they have no accessibility to trash collection , the river became there trash . Now all of these has physically manifested itself and the level of water has decreased regarding the level of trash .

One option was to keep sellling the trash they have in exchange of capital to the industry . But that would only make them more vulnerable and further for them to claim there identity .

Option 2 was more of a risky path , as it would mean for them to find new vernacular ways to revive there kampungs using elements described as “ worthless”. But this option creates hope , newness to the community while hugging their identity .

The trash accumulated in the river was a combination of two neighbour Kampungs , Kampung Bagdan and Kampung Akuarium . These Kampungs united as having a common goal to create growth tought trash : they stoped calling it trash they wanted to call it seed . As a metaphor to them “ planting “ these seeds leading to the  growth and rooth their identity through them .

First the fisherman started expanding their techniques using fishnets to fish “seeds” .Even tho they started collecting a lot of seeds , the seeds we’rent t assorted and demanded loads of labour to collect and then reassort .Kampungs village chef’s met and defined dumping areas in the intercrossing of the 2 kampungs .

Still taking these unknown journey , they wanted to proceed 1 by 1. They needed more accebility to seeds rather then the periphery of the river . They translated physically this wish through bamboo platforms they used to built while being fishermen .

Slowly slowly these  bridges started being built up to link the two Kampungs . These platforms created spaces in between where unexpectedly they started to become meeting spaces . A leisure space on top of the river , where Cahaya and Batari two neighbors would meet while throwing their seeds in the river and talk for hours . And Where Cahya and Bima kids of the neighborhood will go and play a game where they would inspects and warn people if people threw their seeds in the wrong area.

Daud an employer in the skyscraper in proximity would always eat in the foodtrucks in these kampungs like his fellow employees . One day he learned about this new interative trashcan . So after finishing his food he threw his glass bottle in the according section and his paper envelopes in the other. He ended up having as cigarette with his friends and interacting with the locals .

The word spread and due to the central location of these kampungs in the city , these platfroms started acting as connection points between the the kampungs and it’s surroundings : the gated community nearby , the maritime museum , and the streets in proximity . Rather then recycling and  putting them into colored trashcan not knowing where they go , they actually felt like taking this promenade and planting their seeds in this sea of seeds .

The river and the Kampung itself became a hub , a place where people would enjoy to recycle and seed their objects , food they consumed . They were also rooting themselves.

They ended up having loads of seeds but where to plant those seeds ? What did they want to grow through them .

They took out the fishnet in different parts of the river , layed the fabric out under the platform , washed them  and created a market where the women was tryng to recreate objects with glass , or paper . This was working a while but they realised this wasn’t the way they wanted to see  their seeds  grow . Not into capital and recylced objects they needed more …..

Suratmo and Eka held a meeting in the intercrossing of these platforms , it was like an agora everyone was there ready to debate and brainstorm  .

Suratmo asked “ What should our seeds blossom into ?”

People started screaming keys words : FOOD !

                                                                             BUILDING MATERIALS ! SHIPS ! CLOTHES ! MONEY !

Then all of a sudden there was silence , after stating all these resources .

Little Susila spoke with a quite voice “ I need a place to dream “ his brother Ratma added “ The place where Nana Mansur tells us tales about “

Then Sulaiman an old fisher sait “ A place to get ressources like our old fishes , a place where I can also grow “

Mansur a foodtruck owner interupted “ A symbol , not determined place , where our kids will play , out nana will gossip with friends and where we could welcome others to tell our stories “

Rahman asked “ who do you mean by others ? “

Mansur “ people like Daud to come here , and other residents of the city . Even tourist our just seed planters …”

Nana Ratna said “ We need the Forest “

A sound of  amazement and surprise followed this comment

Rahman laughts and said “ Trees ? How our we going to get trees “

Nana Ratna said “ One has to see trees in order to image a forest , yes , but not the new forest . Let me tell you the tale of the new forest  as the old forest is just existing as an image in our minds ,you all know  this new forest and live with it are blind to see” youa re holding pieces of the puzzle but haven’t put it together to see the picture . I will give you the pieces of the puzzle and as a cvommunity we would bring them together

Imagine a flower. Yous see colors , smell it recognize it’s shape then your brain manages to bind all of these perceptions together into one concept of a flower.

Think of the concept of the forest and imagine you blow up all the perceptions and senses that constitute it . Aren’t you a bit stuck and the words are the same : green , tree, light , canopy , plants, birds , darkness, lighteness . All these objective comments is as if you are describing me a painting . Our ancestor in Yogjakarta used to live in the forest therefore , all the stories we know of the forest are not talking about it;s physical properties . Now we live in cities , we don’t dwell our activites like our ancestors in the forest. Forest has become a romantic painting. I am proposing to you to extract all these value that makes our eyes bloom and like little Susila a place where she dreams , so to keep to colors of the painting but liberate it from the forms it resides in. The painting is made from  the same elements . We need to break from the perception of the physical aspects of things and extract  what this physcality is communicating .

Today we live in cities , even us that used to be residents of a village now have to adapt to the conditions and terms of the city .Whereas the forest became a fuel for an extremely demending society. It became the fuel of the city , it built the city  and our routines. We can see a city as a collection and organisation of fragments of the forest . The city as a forest but with it’s trees translated into objects .These objects and tools that makes us able to perform , survive and work .Then a cuted tree is not lost it’s existing in another shape in your ceiling , your phone case , the rubber in your shoe , in your foodtruck Muhamad and in your bike  and kids toys Hasan adn more precisely our seeds.

The materials of the forest is right beside us in our seeds . The tree has been cutted trasnformed , shredded , re asseabled and brought back into us in another shape . Now our seeds or the skin of these objects and tools , it is as if we have a ghost forest underneath us . We need to revive them , create from them a place of belonging a place to enhance our senses, somewhere free, an ecosystem . All these non material properties of the forest should be brought back through it’s ghosts .

“Nothing is lost , nothing is created everything is transformed “

We will build this forest , thought a process including our neighboors we will create this ground with function comming to it after . A modular forest , that shrinks and can be taken out . A human made vegetation.  We will create an actual forest not like these green public squares in the fabric of the city . The new forest will revive the processes of us builfing it  will give it’s spirit

We will restore the connnection we have lost. We shaped the landscape we are inhabiting based on our way of living , which varies from place as cultures varies . This time we would shape it quite literally , this ground will be made from our objects , our traces .We would be recycling but actually we would be reviving .We will restore the fossil fragments and create a canopy .Nature is a temple because it preserves within its forestial enclosure the original familiarity that makes analogies between different things possible . It  belongs to no one in particular , it belongs to everyone who plants it’s seeds .

Kampung Resident’s are using the new forest to claim their identitty.Stripped from their ressources , of being an old fish village . They are only left with trash something described as worthless as their only ressource .

Extract from written Story

“ We will restore the connnection we have lost. “

Building these islands from trash they become more aware of the power of their seeds. They need a roof , to shelter , like a forest canopy made out of the ghost forest seeds.

This island becomes a roof making site . This sense of belonging physically translate itself into a roof .(which also actsas an Agora) .Where on the first layer through organic composting plants are grown . With time the roots of the plants hug the other layer of trash material till this roof becomes solid it is taken out . Re-placed in a house or also with a ritual given back to the forest. .

This new forest canpy production site also revives the old “ fishmarket “ of the Kampungs . Now a trade happens through seeds (trash ) . Where underneath bamboo platforms the fishermen has their fishnets and it is layed in the island.

The Design is at this phase and there is an initial render attempt 🙂

For our next meeting I will make a draft of a drawing compositions so we can discuss on that and how to further expand the design .

All the Best
