This is a drawing showing some of the qualities in the project. This is just a test trying to model in 3d to avoid being flat. Currently I am working on the concept diagrams of forest and growth patterns. The next step will be to apply the blending and lifting concept by the component’s movement, and the approach of guiding trees’ growth patterns.

The project will be a living system bridging the existing forest and the main street in the village where events and activities take place. With some pre-existing trees embraced along the outer envelope of the structure, this intervention is providing a hotbed for tree reproduction.

As the indigenous trees are mainly Ficus species and rattans which are gifted with a natural fusion of branches and curtain-like aerial roots down into earth, they can be used for sun-shading and create a unique micro climate. On the flip side the aerial roots of strangler ficus take over built spaces in a short period of time and have damaged temples and historical buildings in Cambodia.

By controlling water supply in the water tanks as part of the structure, the building constantly guides the growth of the trees rooted in suspended water tanks, leaving spaces below and in-between inhabitable. The structure is shaped by water supply channels reaching different parts of the forest edge and converging at the riverbank, allowing water drawing in the dry season and drainage in the wet season.

Over time the mixture of organic and inorganic canopy guides the trees proliferated, occupying the reserved spaces and having a special environmental performance as a mask, shading and protecting people’s living spaces in between. The design reinterprets the notion of nature and man-made, seeking to create an ‘artificial nature’ to offset the destructive effect of nature while simultaneously making the most of its advantages.

WHAT IF SCENARIO–what if the project could compensate for the lost forest– protect the residents from floods and storms while attracting more migrating fishes?

The residents rely heavily on the protection and nourishing of the flooded forest, however the village continues suffering from deforestation and a loss of natural barrier. Therefore the project aims at providing alternatives for stop them from getting wet and bring more fishes.
